What to bring
Documents you need
The law says we must check these before we make road-legal plates, in the shop or online.
- Proof of your name and addressA driving licence does both. Or bring a utility or Council Tax bill, or a bank statement, from the last 6 months. A passport only proves your name, so bring one of these with it.
- Proof you can use the registrationUsually the V5C logbook for the vehicle. The green "new keeper" slip, a V750 certificate of entitlement or a V778 retention document also work.

Who makes our plates
Our number plates are made by NumberPlateMaster, our own number plate company and a DVLA-registered number plate supplier, at our shop in South Harrow (HA2 0EU). Every plate carries the supplier name and postcode and the British Standard mark, BS AU 145e, below the registration, as the law requires.
Letter sizes and spacing
Every road-legal car plate uses the same typeface and the same sizes:
- Characters 79 mm tall and 50 mm wide (the number 1 and letter I are narrower), with a 14 mm stroke
- 11 mm between characters, and 33 mm between the two groups
- At least 11 mm clear at the top, bottom and both ends
The spacing cannot be changed, for example to make a registration look like a name. Italic, decorative or broken letters, patterns and background pictures are not allowed.
Short and cut-to-fit plates
There is no fixed legal size for a plate. 520 × 111 mm is the standard size, but a shorter plate is legal as long as the characters stay full size, with the legal spacing and at least 11 mm at each end. The plate gets shorter; the letters never do.
Our designer checks this for you: sizes that are too short for your registration are greyed out, and Cut to fit makes the shortest legal plate for your registration.
Badges and flags
You can add a national identifier on the left of the plate: UK, GB, ENG (England), SCO (Scotland) or CYM (Wales), with the Union flag, the Cross of St George, the Saltire or the Red Dragon of Wales. The flag sits above the letters, the badge is no more than 50 mm wide, and it must stay clear of the 11 mm margin.
With the UK identifier and the Union flag, you do not need a separate UK sticker to drive in most European countries. Green flash plates are only for zero-emission vehicles.
3D, 4D and gel letters
Raised letters are allowed. On plates made since 1 September 2021, the whole character, including its sides, must be a single shade of black, and the plate must meet British Standard BS AU 145e.
Colours and fixings
Front plates are black on white and rear plates are black on yellow, on reflective material. The letters themselves must not be reflective. Screws and fixings must not change how any character looks, so use screw caps in the same colour as the plate, or sticky pads.
Motorbikes
Motorbikes registered from 1 September 2001 have a rear plate only, set out on two lines. Ask us about motorbike plates.
Why it matters
Driving with plates that break these rules can mean a fine of up to £1,000, an MOT fail, and the DVLA can withdraw the registration. Plates that do not meet the rules are show plates, for off-road display only.
